It almost sounds like an oxymoron, doesn't it? After all, convenience stores and gas stations are all about fast foods that are highly processed, loaded with sugar, full of preservatives and in no way are contributing to our health, right?

That image of gas station food is about to change in a mighty way. Leading the charge is Erika Landers of Landers Shell Station & Northside Market and Daniel Miller with The Nutrition & Wellness Group. These two have partnered with a powerful vision to change the face of convenience stores nationwide. They have proved that it can be done by launching this menu at the 2212 N. 12th St., Bismarck location.

Landers is a family owned convenience store. In 1968, Ken Landers purchased a Mobile Service Station on the north side of Bismarck. In 1972, Kevin Landers started working for his father and eventually purchased the business with his wife, Margo in 1986. Many transitions have taken place over the last 45 years. In the early '90s, Northside Bait & Tackle was added to meet the growing demands of the fishing and outdoor equipment needs of our community. In 2000, a brand new building went up and the old fashioned service station was torn down to accommodate the new convenience world of the gas station market. Today they are in the process of another cutting edge transition: a healthy, quick serve restaurant. Erika, a third generation Landers, is running Northside Market and offering an amazing menu of healthy soups, salads and treats.

"The Northside Market has been using fresh, organic, local, sustainable food in its menu offerings since it opened," Landers said. "This Jump Start menu is just the next evolution in bringing balance and health to our community and to those passing through."

With Landers' passion for health and somewhat radical idea, she was looking for a positive solution and ran into Miller, owner of The Nutrition and Wellness Group. The Nutrition and Wellness Group is a team of nutrition coaches striving to help people live a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. The programs they offer do not involve dieting. They implement the world-renowned Venice Nutrition principles to change the relationship between people and their food. This allows them to look and feel their best while eating the foods they love and never diet again.

With Landers and Miller sharing the same vision of health and well-being for our society, it became the perfect partnership and the Jump Start Menu was created.

The Northside Market's Jumpstart menu consists of food choices designed specifically to help stabilize your blood sugar by balancing protein, fat and carbohydrate content within the meal. Stable blood sugar allows the body to burn fat as a primary fuel source thereby jump-starting your metabolism.

The menu is affordable with each choice averaging $5-$6. The menu currently has five items: a turkey avocado wrap, tuna wrap, turkey hummus lettuce wrap, a horsey beef hoagie and an Italian veggie hoagie. These choices were created because Bismarck didn't have a place to get balanced meals that fit the protein, fat, carbohydrate ratio which stabilizes your blood sugar to create vitality while shrinking your waist line.

The menu was launched on October 28, 2013 and is available Monday-Friday, 10a.m.-3 p.m. Grab-N-Go Jumpstart meals will be coming very soon. They will be available 5 a.m.-11 p.m. in the fresh food cooler.

Landers and Miller clearly state, "Our vision extends beyond our immediate community. We want to prove this concept can work in a town like ours and then bring it to the rest of the U.S."

Landers Northside Market is the next evolution in gas station and convenience store fast food. Within the next year you will see the entire menu evolve with more balanced, healthier options. Erika and Dan enthusiastically agree, "We will be looking to create franchise opportunities within the next two years."
